WELCOME
Since its first publication in the 1950s, The Carillon has served as the news and communication link between the University and its more than 270,000 alumni. The Carillon newsletter is now going completely online, not just as a way to reduce expenses for the OAR, but to move toward greener, more nature-friendly practices within the office and the University as well. Then, as now, we are grateful for and continue to rely on the support, cooperation and generosity of our readers, the alumni of the University of the Philippines.
UP alumni, their family members and friends are encouraged to contribute news articles and photographs. They are also encouraged to send in biographical updates for the UP alumni database. ‘Blooms and Tides’

Malaya.com

Baluyut_Bright
WELCOME the New Year with the brilliance of colors and the subtle energy of nature with new works by one of the country’s foremost abstract expressionists, Karina M. Baluyut (BS Architecture 1999). Juxtaposing the tabula rasa effect of the incoming tide (albeit with the multihued usage of fuschias, purples, and oranges) with the continuation of her acclaimed series of tropical flora, the architect-turned-painter indulges in a technique that emphasizes emotion over mimesis, surrounding the viewer with an aura of a calming vigor that no doubt echoes the best of our hopes at the start of the year.

Baluyut_Moon Pools
Baluyut is an Architecture graduate of the University of the Philippines and has topped the architectural board exams in 2004. This background in non-linear abstractions that architecture represents enabled her examination in the junction of emotion and the merge of color, shapes, and forms. With the eye of a skilled draftswoman and the sensitivity of a poet, Baluyut constructs new visual realities within the realm of abstraction and reveals the depth of her emotional resonance in works that carry the weight of dissonance, memory, and the awareness of the passage of time.

The pursuit of happiness

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, (LLB 1953 cum laude)
By RACHEL C. BARAWID, ANGELO G. GARCIA, RONALD S. LIM, JASER A. MARASIGAN and IVY LISA F. MENDOZA

MANILA, Philippines — Right from the very beginning of this 60 Minutes interview, it was immediately clear to the Students and Campuses Bulletin (SCB) team why Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile – or JPE –is respected, admired, feared, and all that, in so many ways.

Still whip-smart and incredibly perceptive even at the ripe old age of 88, this man who only wants you to be “happy’’ made the SCB team anything but, deftly parrying our questions about the upcoming impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona and keeping all of his cards very close to his chest.

Really, could one expect any less from someone who’s lived as “varied” a life as Juan Ponce Enrile?

The veteran lawmaker and former Cabinet Secretary was already brilliant at a young age, graduating cum laude in 1949 with an Associate of Arts degree from the Ateneo de Manila University and eventually graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law. As a scholar at the Harvard Law School, he earned a master of laws degree with specialized training in international tax law.

The Asian Scientist Spotlight: Dr. Leopold Ilag Of Stockholm University

TIFFANY CHUA COPOK

Ilag

Dr. Leopold Ilag, Director of the Stockholm University Proteomics Facility, talks to us about his research in Sweden, how he views philosophy, science and religion, and his thoughts on R&D in the Philippines.

AsianScientist (Jul. 4, 2011) – Leopold Ilag is an intriguing person to talk to. A Filipino scientist who earned his PhD in Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics from the Nobel Prize-awarding Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Dr. Ilag is also someone who is in touch with his spirituality.

During the course of my undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, I’ve had the pleasure being acquainted with Dr. Leopold Ilag – then a research associate in the Chemistry Department working on mass spectrometry of macromolecular complexes and membrane proteins. Through his perseverance, this unassumingly serene yet highly inquisitive individual is now the Director of Proteomics Facility and Associate Professor at Stockholm University.

Dr. Ilag’s busy schedule notwithstanding, he believes in giving thanks to the country that raised him. Dr. Ilag has lectured on his research at the University of Philippines Los Baños, as part of the Balik Scientist Program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

A love letter to Jospehine

MANILA, Philippines — Dear Jo,” read the letter, which was handed to Josephine King by one of her girlfriends.

The letter continued on: “My mother told me this is what I needed to do.” And the letter went on about how the young Amado Gabriel Esteban, who was recently named as the new president of Seton Hall University in New Jersey, had fallen in love with his close friend Josephine.

The two met when Jo thought about joining the Math Club. She went to the club’s office and met some of the officers. One of them was Gabriel.

While Jo was busy scrutinizing the scene inside the club office, Gabriel was astounded, mesmerized by the beauty of the lady standing by the door. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. When she turned around to leave because she didn’t like what she had seen, Gabriel felt a sudden panic rising in his heart. He just couldn’t let her go away without even getting her name.

Gabriel, with his club mates in tow, followed her and asked her why she didn’t want to join the club anymore. “It wasn’t the Math club I was expecting,” she told him at that time.  Recently, she explained further: “I was expecting intellectual discussions, analytical computations and problem solving. Their club was more like a fraternity or sorority thing. I didn’t want to have anything to do with that.”
